Innovation Centre

The first of its kind, Innovation Centre is a science building at the Cape Byron Rudolph Steiner School made with Hempcrete breathable walls.

Northern light and cross ventilated sea breezes foster a natural learning environment. The Centre was masterplanned to include gathering spaces and a large courtyard to encourage social interactions between students.

Design Team: Leo, Michael

Builder: Field Construction

Sustainability:

  • Hempcrete walls rendered with natural lime externally and clay internally.

  • Breathable magnesium wall boards were used for the internal walls, also acting as permanent formwork for the hemp.

  • A proclima membrane facilitates the breathable wall system.

  • Oversized exposed stormwater collection system accommodates the the wet seasons in the sub tropical climate

  • Natural Marmoleum rubber floors were specified in place of the industry standard plastic vinyl.
