Zara Springs

A cluster of modernist hemp pavilions nestled into the tweed hinterland escarpment.

The pavilion placement allows inhabitants to live comfortably with the orientation of the sun as it moves across the sky throughout the day.

Hempcrete is used to create a comfortable thermal environment, whilst it sequesters carbon from the atmosphere.

Design Team: Michael, Jamie, Kamil, Elodie

Builder: Fenech

Sustainability:

  • Hempcrete throughout

  • Breathable lime render used externally, offering natural mould resistance

  • Reclaimed wharf timbers used as exposed rafters, fascias, post and beams.

  • Fully off-grid 28 panel solar system

  • 2x 40,000l stainless steel tanks for rainwater harvesting

  • Fan assisted ventilated roof design, reducing the internal heat load
